There are groups of people researching different topics, each one in its own finite space, rarely looking beyond their own subject, but all related to the overarching change we are currently going through.

There are people talking about modern, agile management. The change of our environment due to technical improvements and other related topics forces organizations to implement new ways of working. Related topics are Management 3.0, Holacracy, Sociocracy, Beyond Budgeting.

There are people analyzing the change from a more scientific point of view. Analyzing human’s brain activity. Is there more than only one brain in our body? Are we acting form a network of responsible knots? This research is provoking because we are so used to have a central decision point. This is especially true for our hierarchical view of good functioning organizations. Related topics are new societal and organizational models.

There are people looking at the technical point of view. The technical progress during the industrial revolution has brought us many benefits. Machines are taking over repeatable tasks, robots (in a general term) are becoming inherent in our lives. Related topics are Artificial Intelligence.

There are people analyzing the change from a more psychological perspective. Analyzing human’s cognition. What happens when problems get in our way, when things hinder us from achieving our set goals, when we get upset? According to long-lasting scientific research there is a process inherent in all humans that we are always going through in such moments. Related topics are The Responsibility Process.

There are people discussing a change in mindset. Until now we assume that being a responsible person, good at work, successful and making one’s career makes us happy. But, more and more studies reveal that it is vice versa; being happy makes us more successful, more powerful, more attractive, more balanced, more empathic. It even increases our health and extents our life expectance. Related topics are Happiness Research.

There are people discussing the wealth of nations. What is the right calculation for measuring the wealth and prosperity of nations? It becomes more and more accepted that GDP is the wrong metric. It had its worth during the industrial revolution but is now outdated. Related topics are the Beyond GDP initiative.

Each group acts relatively independent in its own space. But when reading articles and books in each individual subject, reading between the lines one can find aspects that are related to the others. All those as independent appearing and treated subjects are in effect interconnected. Bringing them all together unfolds the complete picture. A picture of the disruptive societal change that is currently ongoing. A picture of how this change not only influences societies but also governments, organizations and individuals. And this is not a smooth transformation, rather a huge disruptive one. But, looking at the whole picture we can generate predictions how this change will shape our future; we will be able to find ways to reduce the negative impacts this change has on us, our society, and organizations.

To get an overview of the individual topics, I suggest reading the following books. Those are the books I have read. Of course, there are other relevant books out there. So, you may add your own favorite books to the list. But reading those books will give you a starting point and hopefully good understanding of the integrated and overarching change we are currently going through.
